Feeding the “New Homeless”

During the weekend of  March 19th and 20th, First Baptist Orlando prepared and delivered 19 pallets of food to 1000 families in Osceola and Seminole Counties in a Love Orlando event. Both counties schools start spring break this week and it was critical to have food and support in their hands before the end of the weekend. Many of the growing number of children in this “new homeless” demographic will be out of school for spring break this week. They wont be getting school and needed immediate help.

Volunteers handed out 1400 fliers to hotels and motels that were identified by a “families-in-transition coordinator” from each county as having a high rate of extended stay families due to foreclosure, unemployment or other financial reasons. Hundreds of families responded to the flyer. The areas for this initial food drop were families that responded in motels off Highway 192 in Kissimmee and in Altamonte Springs off SR 436.

A similar food distribution will take place in Orange next week. Any volunteers wanting to help should call Jandle Gill at (407) 514-4201.
